Cavistons is relatively young having opened only seven years ago. However this is greatly outweighed by the family's 50 years experience of seafood, and friendly front-of-house staff. The menu is selected on a daily basis and freshness and excellence are guaranteed. We wen here for the lunch special - 2 courses for 12.95 or 15.95 with a glass of wine. The offer is available at noon and although early was definately worth the drive across the city. The restaurant is small inside but there was enough space between the tables for privacy. The staff couldn't have been nicer and the choice of 3 starters and 3 mains was great. The "meal deal" also included sides of beautiful potatoes and salad, The portion sizes were great and fish gorgeous, We finished off with a spot of shopping in Cavistons deli next door. We're planning a return trip already. Went to celebrate my dad's birthday as he is a big fish lover, had to change our plans at the last minute and as always, we were graciously accomodated. Mackerel with apricot and chilli jam was a lovely starter, but overshadowed by the gorgeous main courses - in particular the scallops - perfectly cooked and in a lovely butter sauce, and the seared tuna was to die for - melt in the mouth perfection. We were too full for dessert! Our waitress reccomended a wonderful hungarian wine to accompany our meal. Service as always friendly and efficient. Will be coming back! When we got to the restaurant we were told the offer is only available “at the 12pm sitting”! Who ever heard of lunch sittings? Anyway we choose to stay as my mum was looking forward to it. It’s a very small space (can seat 26) & diners are on top of each other. We could hear the till in the shop next door constantly beeping with each sale which was good for them as they were obviously busy but really irritating while eating. To start we had the Tian of Crab – generous amount of crab which was moist, well seasoned and delicious - and the Paperdelle with Shrimp in Chili Oil – loads of shrimp, well cooked pasta, both complimented by the heat of the chilli oil. Next we choose the tranch of cod with mash and the fillet of haddock in a caper & lemon butter. Massive pieces of fish, well cooked but a little bland. I had a glass of pinot griogo, 1 ok capucino and a tea finished the meal which came to €67. Good but won’t be rushing back. Joined Jan 10 10 Reviews 0 Hats Off! loading... If you're in any doubt check out the shop next door and that's what you're eating. The standard menu that they offer is good but the specials are divine. If you're planning something special this is the place. It is small so book inadvance. '); //--> Joined Mar 08 39 Reviews 0 Hats Off! loading... Very tasty fresh sardines, Tuna steak rare as ordered and accompanying salads and sides were fresh and tasty. A lovely restaurant, great service. Never disappointing. I've dined here at least 20 times, usually in party of 4, and none of us have ever had a meal or even a course that we had even a minor complaint about. I'm staggered that the euro rating given is the same as other restaurants that are at least twice as expensive. Caviston's offers fantastic value for money and wine is very reasonably priced. Fantastic fresh dishes perfectly cooked each time and the warmest of service yet very efficient. I always go for the later sitting (15.00) so don't feel under pressure and can relax and enjoy. Happiest Munching (Connoisseur) Credibility Score: 38%   Visited: 06 Nov 2009 | Posted: over 2 months ago I was here as part of a large lunch group during the middle sitting. The food was absolutely delicious, everyone wolfed down all three courses. I'm just glad I wasn't footing the bill, as the prices are extremely steep - you get what you pay for, but not everyone wants to pay €25 for some fish. However, as it took so long for our party's order to be taken and the service to begin, it meant that we ran into the following sitting and were somewhat hustled out the door before everyone was finished their coffees/wine. I was also unfortunate enough to be sitting next to the door, which was extremely cold and uncomfortable on a freezing November day, and anyone who entered the restaurant was practically standing on top of me. They could do with extending or clearing more area near the front door.
