Hin Keng is the next best thing in Northside Chinese Cuisine. The owner is an ex-manager of Wongs, and his attention to detail leaks into every aspect of your dining experience. To begin with the entrance to the restaurant down a side street and up to the second floor was already odd. Unusually I was asked to confirm the mobile number when we got to the restaurant, this was after confirming name and number in party. We did get a nice table in the corner of the restaurant which was a bit quieter as it was busy, I don't think I'd fancy sitting in the middle of the restaurant. The service was poor, we were given v little time to peruse the menu before a server came to take the order, and throughout the meal we were served by nearly every server on the floor (rather than have a server per table as would be the norm and lends itself to tipping). Furthermore their manner was very poor, one particular staff member actually placed both hands quite close to the centre of the table and leaned in on top of us, incredibly off putting and poor manners. The food was average, nothing special, we both had a beef dish which was described as having selection of veg with it and was served with one or two beans. The beef was v good quality. However for €18 for an average beef dish, plus €3 - €5 for rice/chips, I felt the price was quite high. We had ice cream and a cake for dessert, nothing special. Would not recommend and would not visit again. Had heard good things about this restaurant so was expecting a nice meal. The entrance is at the back of the Clontarf Court Hotel beside the car park and there's a bit of an "alley" feel to it, so not a good start. The restaurant is two floors up and is very dark and old fashioned. They really could do with changing the carpet. The staff were friendly but run off their feet so not too attentive. The food was standard chinese fare except for my husband's steamed king prawns which were served in the shell and looked enormous. Some people like this but I found it off putting. We were offered a drink on the house at the end of the meal which is nice but I won't be rushing back. I have eaten better chinese food on many occasions in restaurants not too far from this one. Was there tonight for my mam's 50th birthday. We booked a table for 15 people for 8.30 and sat down in the bar as the table wasn't ready..we eventually got called after nine. We waited until near 10pm for our order to be taken (after asking several times!) It was 10.45pm before we got our mains (for an 8.30 sitting!) I ordered beef curry and it came out under cooked it so I sent it back and ordered chicken balls. They came out in about five minutes gain not right. I am pregnant on twins and was certainly not taking the chance of ordering anything else. The manager was the rude and couldnt have cared less about our wait or the poor quality of our food. They were busier concentrating on smaller tables as they had a higher turnover. NEVER AGAIN!!!! I was nicely surprised - nice staff , good service and lovely prawns sweet and sour and cantonese duck - followed by a drink on the house. All in all I was impressed
