We went for the early sitting at 7pm, as were offered this or 9.30pm by the receptionist when we booked. We were looking forward to the experience; this is a restaurant with a very good reputation, and having read the reviews on MenuPages my expectations were high. Thankfully I was not disappointed. I will start by saying that this is not the best restaurant I have been to, but the service was by far the best I have seen in Dublin. There is not a huge choice on the menu(s), and I believe they concentrate more on quality. I ordered from the €65 set menu, and my wife ordered a main course from the a la carte menu. We received several amuse-bouche between courses, which consisted of a sweet corn veloute, apple jelly with tyme sorbet, and a coconut and chocolate mouse. All were delicious! On to the dinner itself, I had confit of salmon, which was unusual, but really retained the salmon taste, the belly of pork which was accompanied by various other pork offerings, all very good. (Best crackling I ever had!). The desert was chocolate cheery cake. Food was great, presentation beautiful, service excellent and the restaurant itself was very pleasant. We didn’t see the hosts though, and the portions were as you would expect – small….. From the perfect vodka martini at the little bar, to the dinner which lived up to its promise and more, to the excellent and friendly service. It was a more expensive evening than most restaurants but not insanely so and worth every penny. Also bear in mind that delightful little dishes in between courses are not charged. We'd given ourselves two and a half hours, we could easily have stayed longer we were having such a lovely time. A special mention for the sommelier, I described what I wanted and the bottle she choose was perfect. I would certainly go back. Happily so. '); //--> Joined Aug 07 11 Reviews 0 Hats Off! loading... Munchtoo (Connoisseur) Credibility Score: 49% Visited: 17 Apr 2010 | Posted: over 2 months ago I picked l'ecrivain for a special dinner, there were 4 of us. On arrival we were warmly greeted and had a drink from the bar and viewed the menu while waiting for the second two to arrive. Very pleasant bar area on the ground floor, dining area is upstairs. On going up to the table our drinks were brought for us. Two of the party went for the dinner @€65 from that they had Goats cheese to start and said it was delicious. I had the Rabbit which was nice the other starter was also enjoyed. A nice touch was that they gave the table the little extras that come with the dinner even though only half of us were having dinner. These were delicious. For main I had the lamb and it was perfect, the other A La Carte was the veal and this was said to be only nice, because the person hadn’t had veal before and decide they weren’t fond of it. The mains from the dinner were both ducks one medium and the other medium/well, both cooked as ordered and enjoyed thoroughly. We had a two house red for €30 each which were nice. Earlier one of the owners, had come and assisted us and she was very pleasant and added to our enjoyment. Service throughout was excellent. The deserts were both enjoyed. We had an excellent evening. Bill came to €389 including service, which was worth it. I’d wanted a special evening and it was. We started with a drink downstairs in the small bar which was very pleasant and I had high expectations for the restaurant itself. I was disappointed to find that upstairs, whilst nice enough, reminded me of eating in someone's living room. Also, for such a large restaurant there are only two bathrooms in what seems like a draughty cupboard. The service was very good but lacked that extra something I expected from such a well thought of michelin star restaurant. The owner made a point of coming to speak with each table which I thought was a nice touch, until they arrived at our table to ask how we were enjoying our evening only to walk away without waiting for an answer. The food was excellent and the highlight of the evening. However overall I thought that it was a dissappointing evening Dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine came to €230. Whilst I'm happy to pay for superior quality I feel that the overall experience did not match the prices. I won't be returning. I have wanted to go to this restaurant for so long and it really didn’t disappoint. We had the tasting menu with wine. The setting, atmosphere and service was second to none, very polite and friendly. The food was exceptional. . I tasted and enjoyed food I would normally shy away from. As it was the tasting menu I was not expecting normal portions but I did think they were a little on the small side.. that would be my only gripe. For us it really was a treat and one that we both thoroughly enjoyed. On arrival our table was ready which is always good and as we are both veggies, we were delighted to find they also have their own veggie menu - this was a really pleasant surprise. Sevice was attentive and v professional but not obtrusive. After ordering some great cocktails we were treated to course after course of truly amazing food e.g. celeriac velouté with thyme foam, wild mushroom risotto and desserts that were delicious. The taste and presentation is really what this restaurant is all about. The atmosphere was pleasant and the location perfect. I look forward to going along again and to see the expressions of amazement on my friend's faces! My boyfriend and I ordered the sample menu which is apparently 6 courses of the best the restaurant has to offer. The food was absolutely top class and delicious albeit the portions were not large. The service was outstanding and we have no few than 4 wait staff catering to our every need. The bill was very expensive €250 but if you want to splurge and you really enjoy good food then this is the place for you. I'd been looking forward to coming here for years and it didn't disappoint at all. The food was just spectacular. Duck liver to start was literally melting on my plate, still not sure how they did that, beef for main was tender and delicious and the assiette of chocolate for two for dessert was divine, especially the milkshakes. Service was flawless, extremely professional but very friendly, not at all stuffy. I wasn't allowed to see the bill but I'm sure it wasn't cheap but as a once a decade present it was well worth it. << First Page < Prev [Results 1 - 8 of 18] Next > Last Page >>
