We are happy to announce that our A la Carte menu now reflects a 20% reduction in our prices. Established in 1980, The Lobster Pot Restaurant is one of Dublin's best kept dining secrets, blending an old world charm with intimate surroundings. It's a journey of culinary pleasures. A commitment to hard work and high standards. Consistently excellent. The warmth of the owners' greeting at the front door. With elegant energy, the lobster Pot is a place of serenity and hospitality. An open fireplace, polished brass and warming hues and tapestries, set the scene in this friendly family run dining experience. We pride ourselves on an extensive selection of seafood sourced daily, and indeed our equally noted meats, free range poultry and game when in season. We have an extensive wine list that is sure to please the most refined of tastes and a full bar. I first heard of The Lobster Pot years and years ago (roughly 15 years ago!) from an Uncle of mine who claimed it was one of the best restaurants in Dublin and so finally after saving for a couple of weeks my fiance and I decided to give it a try. On arrival we were greeted by a pleasant host who seated us. The pleasant service ended there. Three of the older staff who waited on us over the course of the evening were quite curt and disinterested. The food - The starters were average and not worth a mention (they were acceptable in a casual dining early bird menu). We were then convinced to order the special of the day which was not on the menu. This was to be fresh Cod with Prawns in a light white sauce. On arrival this was simple in the extreme and while nice I feel confident I could have russled the same flavours up at home with minimal effort. Prawns? We got three small ones each.We were then asked if we would like some sides of potato and vegetables. Expecting to get a side plate each, a waiter arrived and spooned two table spoons (one each) of pureed carrot and one table spoon each of mashed potato. We could tell immediatley (owing to the dried sides of his serving dish) that these had been microwaved. They did not taste much better. We noticed a waiter a little later with a desert trolley. Only three tables had customers at this point and he returned to the kitchen without offering us our choice. Deflated and defeated we decided to leave and had difficulty summoning our bill. When it arrived we were a shocked. 2 mediocre starters,2 mediocre mains,1 coffee, the bill was 130 euro which included a service charge of 18 euro's! Our one spoon of microwaved carrot and mash cost us 4 euro each! The Lobster Pot is clearly living on past glories. The food, the ambiance and the service were all top class. The staff were immaculately turned out, greated us warmly but not stuffily and made us feel very relaxed. My husband loves fish which is why we choose here and he was not disappointed. Im not too fond of fish myself but I gave the pan fried crab claws in garlic a go and they were yum! There was plenty other non-fishy dishes to choose from and our food was delicious. I particularly loved the crepes suzettes done at our table for dessert. While we picked this place as a treat because we heard the prices were a bit high, we have since gone back for the early bird for the hubby's birthday early this month and it was great value so I'd highly recommend it. Originally having intended going further afield, the weather determined our choice in the end. ( It was snowing and blowing a gale!) You ring the doorbell to gain entry when you arrive and the Maitre d' arrives down to collect you and bring you upstairs and takes your coat. As it was a Tuesday night, there were only a very few tables occupied. I couldn't order a glass of prosecco as only available by the bottle so just has a sparkling water. Himself had a beer and we perused the menu and the restaurant itself. We had a nice seat beside the window overlooking Ballsbridge and also more importantly beside the radiator. The waiter informed us that there was no lobster available, after we had both decided to order it. We made our choices of Scallops and prawns in garlic butter for him and Chicken Liver paté for me. The waiter brought the pan to the table and spooned out the scallops and prawns at the table. For mains, I ordered the Coquille St Jacques and he had the dover sole. Both were lovely, but not outstanding. A nice creme brulee for me rounded off the meal. The menu is a bit like time travel, quite dated, back to the seventies in some cases. I felt that the price did not reflect the experience we had, with the bill coming to over €270 for two starters, two mains, one dessert, a bottle of wine (€32) one beer and a bottle of sparkling water. As aforementioned, the restaurant was very quiet with most of the tables unoccupied, and aproaching the end of our main courses, we were the only patrons in the restaurant. We were enjoing a quiet conversation when the waiter showed a party of four men to the table directly beside us, all of whom appeared to be architects intent on talking about sewerage disposal units and grease traps! It spoiled what was left of our meal, particularly as they could have been seated at ANY other table in the restaurant. I wouldn't return to The Lobster Pot as I feel that there is better value to be had elsewhere. Watch out, the price on the menu dosen't match the bill. The chef went home before we were finished. As a result we couldn't get the crepes suzette as we were told we didn't pre-order. They also have a 15% service charge a bit of a cheek in this day i think. I couldn't do anything about that but they didn't get a tip. Not the place to go for that special night out
