Head of a Woman 1960, on loan from private collection.
Head of a Woman (1960) was painted from memory by Francis Bacon upon his return to London following a short stay in St Ives from late September 1959 to mid January 1960. The subject is the wife of an artist whom Bacon had met in St Ives and the painting is one of a number made of the same subject with the distinctive green background around this time. Medical textbooks were among the diverse range of material consulted by Bacon when painting and the heightened colour and loose modelling of paint of Head of a Woman may have been derived from colour plates illustrating skin disorders found among the items in his studio.
Opening Times
