South County Dublin

South County Dublin (includes the Administrative Regions of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, part of Dublin City, and South County Dublin) is the area south of River Liffey and Dublin City which extends to the Dublin Mountains near County Wicklow. Much of this area is occupied by Dublin City's suburbs but there is also a large area of hinterland, hills and mountains. The presence of the M50 Motorway allows easy access to all the national primary routes, the railway, and the seaports.

South County Dublin is an ideal place to visit as many of its attractions to visitors are located in suburbs along the DART (Suburban Rail) line. The area is also served by an extensive bus service and in 2004 a new tramway called LUAS (Irish for speed).

This area contains Dublin's only designated Heritage Town, Dalkey (prounced Dawkey). Dalkey is a pleasant town 13km (8 miles) from Dublin City Centre. It boasts many visitor attractions including 3 castles, two harbours, an island, a visitor centre, many fine restaurants, pubs and cafes, and some of the finest views of Dublin and the Wicklow Mountains.

Dn Laoghaire (prounced Dune Leera) is the principal town in South County Dublin and the second port of Dublin. The harbour is the principal attraction of the town but other attractions include a maritime museum and The Pavilion Theatre.

Other attractions in South County Dublin include The Pearse Museum, a museum dedicated to the 1916 Easter Rebellion leader Pádraig Pearse; Rathfarnham Castle, a fine house dating from the 1580s; Drimnagh Castle, an outstanding example of an old feudal stronghold; James Joyces Tower near Dun Laoghaire, where Joyce wrote and set the first chapter of Ulyssees; and The National Print Museum in Ballsbridge.

Nearby South County Dublin is Bray, a town which developed as a 19th century seaside resort with a fine hill walk up Bray Head.
